Qld: Premier to open Gallery of Modern Art
BRISBANE, Dec 1 AAP - Premier Peter Beattie will today officially open Queensland's
new Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA).
The gallery is part of a $291 million redevelopment of the cultural precinct on Brisbane's
South Bank.
The gallery will show more than 1,100 contemporary art works worth more than $8.2 million
acquired over the past four years.
But the opening exhibition is the 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art.
Mr Beattie said cultural tourism had become big business across the world.
"The new gallery will cement Brisbane's place on the list of must-sees for all visitors,"
Mr Beattie said.
The gallery also features a twin-cinema showing art films - a first for an Australian
art museum - and a children's art centre.
The official opening ceremony is today, but Mr Beattie will return to the gallery as
it is opened to the public tomorrow.
