Vic: Boost to transit police numbers
Up to 50 extra armed police will ride Melbourne's trains and trams to help improve
public transport safety.
News Limited newspapers report the Victorian government will spend up to 30 million
dollars under the forthcoming Victorian transport plan .. to be released this month.
The new officers will boost the ranks of the police transit branch to 250 members.
It's unclear where the new police will be placed .. but News Ltd says it's expected
they'll be sent to cover troubled areas .. including the Hurstbridge, Frankston, Pakenham
and Lilydale rail lines.
The report says closed-circuit surveillance cameras will be upgraded to digital by
the middle of next year .. and station staffing and lighting would be improved.
